Community Cat Food Bank

     Meeting a Community Need
Low or fixed income El Dorado County residents have trouble buying enough food to feed the feral cats they have "adopted".  Typical colonies range from 4 to 12 cats.

Simple math shows how much it costs to feed a single feral cat for one year:
  • 1 cat eats 8 oz. of dry food per day, or 9 - 20 lb. bags per year.
  • 20 lb. bag of cat food costs approx. $10
  • That means it costs a minimum of $90 to feed one cat for one year.

Based on these figures the El Dorado County Humane Society has developed the Community Cat Food Bank.

Prerequisite to Qualify

  • There is no means test of individual colony caretakers when it comes to income.  Instead, a home visit and interview will be how financial need is determined.
  • The cats within a single colony must either be spayed/neutered or in the process of being trap/neutered/returned (TNR) for the caretaker to qualify for assistance.
  • Caretakers must understand that the purpose of the program is to "supplement, not sustain" feeding efforts.  He/She should also make a reasonable effort to provide at least 1/2 of the food for the cats within that particular colony.
