Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Program

Trap-neuter-return (TNR) is a program through which free-roaming cats (that do not belong to anyone) are humanely trapped; sterilized and medically treated; and returned to the outdoor locations where they were found.

If these locations are deemed unsafe or otherwise inappropriate, efforts are made to relocate feral cats to farmyard homes.  Kittens still young enough to be socialized and friendly adult cats are typically placed in foster care for adoption into homes as companion animals.

TNR's Success

In El Dorado County, over 1,600 feral cats have been trapped, spay/neutered and returned.
The TNR program is now a program of the El Dorado County Humane Society and with our added support will offer training to local residents interested in trapping feral cats on their own properties.

Local TNR programs are the "most humane, effective and financially sustainable strategy for controlling free-roaming cat populations."

TNR is not without it's opponents, primarily groups concerned with the welfare of birds and other small animals.  The El Dorado County Humane Society understands the controversy behind TNR, yet we are convinced that the method is the most humane option available to help control the feral cat population.  If a feral cat colony is properly managed, no new kittens are born and the population eventually dwindles.  For more information about local feral cat colonies and trapping assistance, please contact us.
